Think of your skin as a highly sensitive security system. When an "alarm" is triggered by an intruder (like an environmental cause), the system responds with red flashing lights - redness and blotches that tell you your skin is in distress. Plant compounds act like a technician who repairs the skin barrier and reinforces the skin’s structure (the blood vessels) to prevent future false alarms.

Redness and blotches on the skin are primarily caused by inflammation. This inflammation can be triggered by a variety of internal and external factors, ranging from temporary environmental irritants to chronic systemic diseases.  Plant-based compounds can offer relief from certain common causes of redness and blotches.  As some examples:

  • Allergies and Irritants: Known as contact dermatitis, this occurs when the skin reacts to external triggers like soaps, detergents, cosmetics, certain fabrics, metals, or plants like poison ivy.
  • Chronic Inflammatory Conditions: onditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea are major contributors. Rosacea, in particular, causes chronic facial redness that can be flared by heat, stress, or spicy foods.
  • Environmental and Lifestyle Factors: Sunburn, cold or hot weather, intense exercise, hormonal changes, alcohol consumption, and psychological stress are frequent triggers for blotchy skin.

Healing Plant Compounds

Plant-derived compounds treat redness by targeting the underlying irritation and cause to manage skin redness.  Several specific plant-based ingredients are highly effective:

  • Polyphenols: This broad group includes Some plant oils that have shown anti-inflammatory properties are castor oil, black currant oil, olive oil, borage oil, turmeric oil (and extract), orange oil and ginger oil.
  • Tannins: These act as astringents to help tighten skin tissues. A primary source is Witch Hazel extract, but these compounds can be found in tea and pomegranate extracts, olive oil.
  • Silymarin: Found in milk thistle, this compound offers potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection and reduces redness, reduces acne lesions.
  • Calendula extract contains flavonoids and triterpenoids that have both an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that will reduce redness and blotches
  • Oat powder contains avenanthramides, potent polyphenolic antioxidants that act as powerful anti-inflammatory agents, blocking inflammatory pathways and suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines and histamine, alongside other compounds like saponins and beta-glucans that soothe and protect the skin barrier.
  • Prickly pear extract is rich in phenolic compounds (flavonoids like quercetin, isorhamnetin, kaempferol) which reduce skin redness and betalains (like betanin), which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, Vitamin E (tocopherols) and beneficial fatty acids (linoleic, oleic) that calm irritation, shield from UV damage, and support skin barrier function, effectively combating redness from inflammation or sun exposure.
  • To repair the skin barrier and reduce redness and irritation, castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, fatty acid that moisturizes, reduces inflammation, and protects the barrier by reducing redness and promoting healing,
  • Sunflower oil repairs the skin barrier primarily through its high content of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that supports natural barrier function, along with other compounds like oleic acid, providing moisture and emollient benefits, and antioxidants like vitamin E, protecting against damage.
