Skin resilience comes from supporting all the factors discussed in our series to achieve "normal" skin: even tone, firmness, and balanced oil production. When your skincare gives you the key compounds and nutrients it needs to preserve these conditions, your skin "bounces back" more quickly from exposure to environmental stressors, injury or illness. Compounds like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, fatty acids, Niacinamide (Vit B3), Panthenol (Vit B5), Vitamin C, and antioxidants (polyphenols/flavonoids), build the skin barrier, retain moisture, reduce inflammation, and promote cell repair and collagen synthesis, all essential for recovery from dryness, damage and irritation. Here are important building blocks for resilient skin:
Moisture Barrier Building & Hydration:
- Ceramides (lipids that form the skin's barrier, preventing water loss) are found in natural oils rich in ceramides or ceramide precursor fatty acids such as jojoba oil (up to 96%), safflower oil (~78%), grape seed oil (~73%), poppy seed oil (~70%), sunflower oil (~68%), and hemp oil (~60%). Natural extracts containing ceramides used to support the skin barrier, include soybean, wheat germ, rice, konjac, and sweet potatoes.
- Glycerin (natural emollient, protects and repairs the skin barrier): Plant-based glycerin (vegetable glycerin) is derived from triglyceride-rich plant oils, commonly palm oil, soybean oil, or coconut oil.
- Squalane (mimics sebum, reinforces skin barrier): Significant amounts of this compound are found in plant-based oils such as amaranth oil (highest plant concentration at 1–6%), olive oil (0.8–13 g/kg), wheat germ oil and rice bran oil.
- Fatty Acids (Omega-3/6 - emollients that smooth and seal the skin): Top natural oils high in omega-3 & 6 are hemp seed oil, flaxseed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, rosehip oil, pumpkin seed oil and marula oil
- Amino acids and pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (attract water into skin cells): Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid (PCA) is found in coconut oil, seaweed and grasses and soybean extract. Plant based oils high in amino acids include argan oil, virgin coconut oil (VCO), olive oil, jojoba oil, rosehip and sea buckthorn.
Repair & Anti-inflammatory Agents:
- Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) (strengthens the moisture barrier, important for cell regeneration, anti-inflammatory): Natural extracts that are high in Niacinamide include yeast extracts and white birch extract. Aloe vera is a potent natural alternative to niacinamide for improving skin texture and reducing inflammation.
- Licochalcone A from licorice root calms irritated skin
- Antioxidants & Collagen Support (protects against environmental damage, collagen formation, promotes cell growth): The best natural extracts highest in Vitamin C include Kakadu plum, Sea buckthorn, Amla (Indian gooseberry), rosehip, guava, sweet potato and citrus fruits (orange, lemon).
- Polyphenols (protect against oxidative stress and inflammation): Natural extracts rich in polyphenols include green and white tea, grape seed extract, pomegranate, rosemary, and turmeric. These extracts provide potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and UV-protective (photoprotective) benefits, reducing photoaging, acne, and pigmentation.
- Vitamin E (support skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, accelerate healing}: Natural oils high in Vitamin E include wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, almond oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, argan oil and rice bran oil.
- Carotenoids (protect skin cells): crude palm oil is the richest plant source of provitamin A carotenoids. Other highly carotenoid concentrated natural oils include red palm oil, sea buckthorn oil (and extract) and carrot oil. These oils and extracts act as potent antioxidants.
Making these ingredients part of your skincare regimen will build resilient skin that recovers from environmental and health stressors. These compounds work together, allowing the skin to quickly and effectively repair and maintain its resilience.
