When our skin's oil production is not balanced, we end up with an over production that makes our skin oily, clogs pores and can lead to inflammatory conditions like acne. So what causes this imbalance? Remember all those warnings from your mom? Well, science has proven that she was right in many ways. There are a number of causes of an oil imbalance: hormonal fluctuations (puberty, stress, menstruation, pregnancy), genetics, diet (high glycemic load foods such as sugar and refined carbs, dairy), environment (temperature, humidity, pollution), and skincare practices (harsh cleansers disrupting the skin barrier), which lead to either excessive oily skin/acne or dryness.
Plant compounds that balance oil production in oily skin
- Tea Polyphenols: These plant compounds, especially epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, from green or white tea extract help reduce oil secretion and inflammation by inhibiting fat production in skin cells and targeting acne-causing bacteria
- Witch Hazel: This natural extract contains tannins known for their astringent properties, which help regulate sebum production and minimize the appearance of pores, as well as flavonoids and phenolic acids for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits that help with oil regulation.
- Willow Bark, Wintergreen and Aloe Extract: These extracts are a source of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate deep into pores to dissolve built-up oil, dead skin cells, and dirt, preventing clogs. It also is a natural oil regulator, modulating oil-producing cells to reduce oil over production, preventing acne formation. Its exfoliating action clears pores for smoother skin.
