ABOUT PAPAYA EXTRACT

Carica papaya, an evergreen tropical plant belonging to the Caricaceae family, is widely recognized not only as a nutrient-dense food but also as a "king of medicine" due to its extensive pharmacological and cosmeceutical potential. Often referred to as the "Angel's Fruit," papaya has a long history of traditional use in treating various skin disorders, a reputation supported by its rich profile of bioactive phytochemicals.

The enzyme papain acts as a natural exfoliant by digesting and removing dead and pigmented skin cells (corneocytes) that are difficult to remove physically. In clinical settings, these enzymes facilitate enzymatic debridement by digesting necrotic (dead) tissue in wounds without damaging healthy tissue.

Antioxidant Action

The high concentration of Vitamins A, C, and E, along with phenolic compounds, allows papaya extract to neutralize free radicals and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). This function is critical because ROS, often triggered by UV radiation and pollution, attack skin structures and destroy collagen and elastic fibers.

Skin Brightening

For skin brightening, papaya extract acts by inhibiting tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin synthesis. It also inhibits related proteins like TRP-1 and TRP-2, which collectively slows down the conversion of the amino acid tyrosine into skin pigment.

Anti-inflammatory Activity

The extract reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and restricts inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins. This helps prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and reduces skin irritation.

Research into the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of papaya has found that crude fruit extracts possess inherent UV-protection abilities, with one study recording an in vitro SPF value as high as 16.047.

While papaya extract has a favorable safety profile, some considerations remain.  Although ripe papaya is safe, the enzyme papain found in unripe fruit or latex can sometimes cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
