ABOUT APRICOT KERNEL OIL

Apricot kernel oil, Prunus armeniaca kernel oil, is a nutrient-dense botanical lipid that has been used for over 4,000 years.  Extracted from the single large seed or kernel housed within the apricot fruit, this oil is a revered active ingredient in skincare.

Properties and Chemical Composition

Apricot kernel oil is characterized as a lightweight, non-greasy, and rapidly absorbing "dry oil" and a perfectly balanced matrix of essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that support skin health:

  • Fatty Acid Profile: Oleic Acid (Omega-9), typically ranging between 55% and 70%, and Linoleic Acid (Omega-6), which accounts for 20% to 30%. It also contains Palmitic (4-10%), Stearic (1-5%), and Palmitoleic acids. It also contains Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA), which plays a vital role in toning and firming the skin while maintaining moisture balance.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: The oil is naturally rich in Vitamin E, which acts as a powerful antioxidant, and Vitamin A, which is essential for skin repair. It also provides Vitamins B1, B2, and C, alongside minerals such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.
  • Phytochemicals and Bioactives: The oil contains phytosterols (such as beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol), squalene, and polyphenols like quercetin and catechins. While the raw kernels contain amygdalin—a compound that can be toxic if ingested—amygdalin is not soluble in oil, making the extracted kernel oil safe for topical use.

Dermatological Function

Because its lipid content is compatible with human sebum, apricot kernel oil integrates flawlessly into the skin's lipid barrier. This allows it to function as an exceptional penetration enhancer, carrying its own nutrients—and other active ingredients in a formulation—deep into the skin.

Topically, the oil functions as a versatile emollient. It works by softening and nourishing the stratum corneum.  Unlike heavier oils, its lightweight structure allows for deep absorption without clogging pores, making it an exceptional non-comedogenic active suitable for oily and sensitive skin.

Benefits for the Skin

  1. Deep Hydration and Barrier Repair: Apricot kernel oil provides deep relief for dry, sensitive, or reactive skin by delivering essential lipids directly to the epidermis. By reinforcing the natural skin barrier, it helps decrease trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), ensuring the skin remains supple and rehydrated.
  1. Anti-Aging and Cellular Regeneration: Vitamin E and phytosterols support the skin's structure. Regular application promotes cell turnover, which results in a firmer, more resilient, and youthful appearance. Its antioxidant properties help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles, especially around the delicate eye area.

  2. Management of Inflammatory Skin Conditions: Studies indicate that apricot kernel oil has potent anti-inflammatory effects, relieving conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. It has been shown to reduce the thickness of the stratum corneum while promoting the repair of the epidermal cellular layer.  Skincare formulations with apricot kernel oil have shown a significant reduction in scaling, redness, and thickening of the skin.
  1. Acne: Apricot kernel oil has antibacterial properties and theability to balance oil production making it effective for managing acne nd skin irritations.
  1. Wound Healing and Skin Repair: Apricot kernel oil accelerates wound healing. This is due to its high concentration of fatty acids, Vitamin E, and squalene, which together enhance cell growth and reduce stress in the wound area. It is also effective in supporting the healing of scars and blemishes.
  1. Natural Cleansing and Makeup Removal: Apricot kernel oil is highly effective at dissolving oil-based debris. It melts through waterproof makeup, sunscreen, and environmental pollutants without stripping the skin's protective barrier or causing irritation.

Safety

Apricot kernel oil is generally well-tolerated with a minimal risk of irritation, making it suitable for all skin conditions, including the sensitive skin. It does not clog pores, even when used on oily skin to balance natural hydration.

Conclusion

Apricot kernel oil is a multi-purpose oil.  Its unique combination of high-penetration fatty acids, potent antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties allows it to function as a moisturizer andd as an agent capable of treating chronic skin disorders and protecting against environmental aging. Whether used for daily hydration, as therapeutic relief for dermatitis, or as a gentle cleanser, apricot kernel oil is a pure, clean, and effective ingredient.
